About
Country storytelling navigating heartbreak with rock grit
When Bailey Zimmerman decided to chase his dreams in Nashville, he had no backup plan. Now he’s country’s gravelly-voiced hitmaker with the golden touch.
The boy from small-town Illinois just wanted to build trucks. Instead, Zimmerman got a one-way ticket to Nashville. He thought he could hold a tune while singing along to favourite songs in his car. And when he posted a recording of him singing Black Stone Cherry’s ‘Stay’ on Snapchat, he only did it to impress girls. For better or worse, he got the ear of an old acquaintance, Gavin Lucas.
Zimmerman had gained a following of several thousand promoting the trucks he was building with his brother on TikTok. So he posted ‘Never Comin' Home’, a searing, stripped-back goodbye to a cheating lover he later co-wrote with Lucas, hoping to get his friend’s talent out there. It was his first-ever attempt at songwriting. It went viral overnight.
Despite his obvious talents, by all accounts Zimmerman became a country phenom by accident. But, following this viral sign with a big leap of faith, quitting his steady union job to chase his dream in the glittering Music City in 2021, would come to define him as an artist and person — from giving unknown songwriters on social media their first big break to recruiting country superstar Luke Combs to sing with him ‘Backup Plan’, four years later, a rousing anthem to chasing your do-or-die dreams: “If you got something to prove, go on and prove it. Don't let nobody clip your wings.”
Zimmerman’s first releases were shaped by resonant storytelling and heartache. Propelled by the electrifying farewell to a flame ‘Fall In Love’ and slow-burning country rock lament ‘Rock And A Hard Place’, his 2022 debut EP Leave The Light On scaled into the Billboard top 10, setting the tone for what was to come. These two songs were also featured on 2023’s Religiously. The Album., the biggest streaming debut LP of the year across all genres, and the biggest streaming country debut of all time, establishing Zimmerman's as a new-generation country powerhouse, with his pained rasp and honest vulnerability front and centre.
It would take another album for Zimmerman to prove his merit as an arena-sized country-rocker in the wake of lost love. Featuring big-name collaborations spanning Luke Combs, super-producer Diplo and chart-topping singer-rapper The Kid LAROI, 2025’s Different Night Same Rodeo decodes toxic relationship patterns to the sounds of banjo and fiddle, while a euphoric pop bounce conveys his newfound confidence to explore new experiences. The rising star faces critics head-on by stating he’s anything but ‘New to Country’, and staying true to his rural roots despite his dizzying success. The album was followed by the announcement of Zimmerman's first arena tour, this time not just channelling the raw energy of personal rock idols like Tesla and Nickelback, but also conquering big stages in their footsteps.
Meanwhile, Zimmerman continued to keep a direct line to fans on social media, speaking openly about his ADHD, or a famously drunken performance that made headlines, owning up to his mistakes as an artist in his mid-20s with a lot of growing up still to do. “Yeah, gettin' back up, that's the only backup plan you need.”
