About
"Songs like “Play” and “Hypersoft Lovejinx Junkdream” are both intricate and powerful, a host of genres all sublimely interwoven to make a deft pop statement. As dazzling as a rabbit pulled out of a hat, and as wily and soft too." - Pitchfork, Best 50 Albums of 2025
"james K has spent over a decade clubbing between Brooklyn and Berlin. Following a slew of experimental shoegaze releases, Friend finds her on the brink of pop stardom. It is platformed by London powerhouse AD 93, and her seraphic voice disintegrates into blunted strums and trip-hop grooves. Aided by contributions from Priori, Patrick Holland, ex-terrestrial, Ben Bondy, Special Guest DJ, and Hank Jackson, Friend is coated in gauze. This love letter to a rave community plays more like Cocteau Twins than Coki." - Stereogum Best Albums 2025
A version of james K was born. Comprised of bones, reactive metals and a larynx with freckled eyes that catalyzes that mix, she can now see through all the schemes. This is the truth. When she chews gum, it’s not clear which one of her personas does it. Since their first release in 2013, describing them separately is grunt work as they switch places, cosplay each other and would most likely lull you into a lonesome dream. Together, they know how to produce, sound, film and edit. Thus, they are brought to the table, performing and DJing in clubs and theaters, along composers and children alike. She has performed in festivals and venues such as Dekmantel, Sustain Release, Mutek, iii Points, and Nowadays. In recent years she has shared the stage with James Ferraro, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Yves Tumor, Morton Subotnick, Nick Leon, and Priori, among many others.
She has released with labels such as AD 93, Incienso, PAN, iDEAL, Dial, UNO, among others, and started her label She Rocks! in 2015. Her collaboration with hoodie, a 10” titled ‘Scorpio,’ was released in summer 2023 via AD 93, landing on numerous EOTY lists. She followed up with another single, trip-hop gem, ‘Blinkmoth (July Mix),’ which has garnered similar attention, landing at number 2 on Resident Advisor’s ‘Best Tracks of 2024,’ and numerous other EOY lists, the former publication naming her producer of the year. K has been a resident on NTS, with her show, ‘Trip Lick,’ since 2019, and she has provided mix’s for series such as Dekmantel, Crack and Fact. She is sought after for her signature magnetic vocals, lyricism and production and, through collaborations, has created critically acclaimed music with artists such as Moin, Fergus Jones + Huerco S., Priori, Special Guest DJ, Yves Tumor, Drew McDowall, LEYA, and many others. She produces music that makes temporary haven for indomitable lyrics – and these are in constant flux. You can check what they are here: [917 908-1173]. It’s only a part of her fairly detailed world. A world that she abandons and then builds upon. Sometimes you can’t hear the words......since anything beyond everything she wants to give you a hint......it’s not pretty (but it’s pretty).
Take a sip of water before your memory error blinks. Dial to K. Listen to the disfragmented territory and the cast of it she’s making. It might not be what you will have thought tomorrow.
